Quality and substance from Milkwood to Riverworld
15 April 2010
IAN  and Nina Robertson of Milkwood Stud near Port Elizabeth are looking forward to showing buyers their four lots consigned to the 2010 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale.

They are especially excited about Lot 49, Sylviidae, a son of Silvano and Birdsong who comes up in Day One, Friday 23 April.  The Robertsons are hoping this one can become an Equus Award winner like Festive Occasion, the top staying filly raised on their farm.  Ian comments: “Sylviidae is a big colt with a lot of presence. He walks and trots beautifully, in fact he floats!”

Lot 366, Glamourbomb, is by Silvano from Mostly Mischief.  Her first dam contains black type courtesy of Listed-winning sprinter Miss Mischief and her extended female line has good American blood.

VAR filly Castellette (Lot 278), represents a Cox’s Ridge x Damascus Cross in her female line and Ian tells: “Pippa Mickleburgh of Avontuur Stud recommended this for a nick with Storm Cat through VAR.”

Milkwood’s neighbour Danika Stud, with the success of horses like 2008 Equus Champion Stayer King’s Gambit and impressive juvenile winner Zanzamar fresh in the memory, will be hoping there is another top runner among its five-strong consignment. King’s Gambit’s half-brother Brompton’s Lad (Lot 291) is by Spectrum from Lady Brompton, the cracking Al Mufti mare from one of the best families in the stud book.

Lot 527 is Captain Tempest, by Captain Al from  Elliodor’s daughter Stormy Summer.  Danika’s Nicky Bartlett says this colt is “nice and unusually big for a first foal.”

Danika has had to withdraw from the Sale a smart Black Minnaloushe colt (Lot 517) due to injury, but will be selling Aces High (Lot 328) as an agent. This one, says Nicky, is highly thought of and well worth a look.

Out Malmesbury way, Sorrento Stud’s Terry Andrews says: “I don’t want to be biased, but our 2010 crop is really nice, one of the best we’ve had.”

Top of his list is Lot 29, Ladysingtheblues, a National Emblem filly from Aretha. She’s a half-sister to leading three-year-old Nocturnal Affair and is "big, strong and well-conformed.”

Terry also raves about Victor Ivo (Lot 289), a colt by VAR from Lady B Sharp. “Victor Ivo is a good-looking, muscled horse. Denis Drier came to see him, he wants another as good as Val De Ra and he was highly impressed.  He loved this colt.’’

Justanotherday (Lot 272) is an “iron grey” filly, reflecting some of her sire Daylami’s genes. “She’s an eye-catcher this one,” enthuses Terry about this filly born from former top sprinter Just Do It Joey.

Hendrik Winterbach of Riverworld Stud near Franschoek, known for breeding champion filly Irridescence, believes More Of Me (Lot 170) is a colt that will impress buyers. Like his name suggests, More of Me has quality and substance. He’s by Silvano from Feathersoft and hails from the family of The Decorator.

Hendrik says that his colt Acabar (Lot 430), has “very good legs for a Jallad” with good scope. He is from the Royal Chalice mare Princess Belinda.

Another Silvano colt Asperitas (Lot 513) doesn’t have the same size as More Of Me, but Hendrik comments: “He’s a nice specimen and his young dam was a good race filly who has already produced winners and is bound to throw a top horse soon.”
