Klawervlei, Wilgerbosdrift will hit the headlines over and over
25 April 2010
REGULAR Top five contenders on the South African Breeders’ Log, Klawervlei Stud and Wilgerbosdrift Stud have consigned drafts to be extremely proud of to the 2010 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale.

The yearlings sired by Klawervlei’s headline-hitting stallion Captain Al have already enjoyed plenty of attention this week. If you haven’t managed to get to the sales ground yet, you can view them on
http://www.klawervlei.co.za.

Klawervlei’s John Koster’s personal pick among the Captain Al’s this year is Lot 590, Second Tycoon, due to make his appearance in the ring late on Day 3, Monday 26 April. He is a handsome specimen, the third produce of Grade 1 placed Tycoon Rosita.

Lot 150, Galingale, is a “neat and tidy” National Emblem filly from a long family of champions. Her dam Entice The Wind has a Grade 1 winner, Exhilaration, from her first five foals and her own half-sister Grecian Gale has a Grade 1 Summer Cup winner (Malteme) and a Grade 1 Woolavington Stakes winner (Wendywood) to her name.

John speaks with pride of Klawervlei’s three imports at the sale.

Lot 364 is an unnamed bay filly by Danehill’s son Ontario (IRE), a young Coolmore stallion who has enjoyed remarkable success in a short period of time. Ontario, a former Champion two-year-old in France and multiple Group 1 winner in the UK and Ireland, sired a Group 1 winning two-year-old in the UK in his first season.

Tycoon Touch (Lot 426) has the pedigree of a stallion. He is a son of former European Champion Sprinter Royal Applause (GB), who has sired dozens of stakes winners in Europe. His dam is Grade 1-placed Polar Charged (Polar Falcon), on her part a half-sister to Pivotal, current Champion stallion in the UK. ”He’s a beautiful horse, come see for yourself,” raves John.

Lot 496, Combattimento, is by Dansilli (GB), a prepotent sire of well over 720 winners including several champions in Europe since 2001. Several of Dansilli’s offspring are well known in South Africa. They include Arc ‘Triomphe winner Rail Link, also Passage Of Time and Delegator.

Another Klawervlei “plum” is Lot 427 Duke of Beaufort, a smart chestnut colt and very popular among prospective buyers. His sire National Assembly produced a leading stallion in National Emblem while his Grade 2-placed dam, Poppy is a half-sister to the dam of deceased sire Victory Moon.

Freshman sire Albert Hall and Diza Gem produced a colt named Albert’s Charm (Lot 130). John says this one is a very nice specimen whose second dam Dragonada is a full-sister to successful sire Caesour.

Klawervlei as agents on behalf of clients will also be selling among others smart young colts by Dynasty (486, x Secret Of Victoria) and National Emblem (452 x Red Apple).

Wilgerbosdrift suffered a big setback when their resident stallion Rich Man’s Gold died in 2008, but in Tiger Ridge and Right Approach they have a pair of new stallions who will undoubtedly take Mary Slack’s establishment to great heights.

Stud Manager John Everett says they were delighted to see Right Approach break the ice with two winners in the last few days. Tiger Ridge, already proven internationally, has enjoyed a brilliant start in  South Africa with a Listed winner from his first few local runners and reportedly several other good ones waiting in the wings.

Early on Day Two, Sunday, Wilgerbosdrift will be selling Lot 145 Eagle Point, a nice bay colt by Right Approach from the top race filly Emerald Beauty, who won the Grade 1 Fillies Guineas before being shipped to Dubai and winning there too. Pales Verde (Lot 323) is a colt by Right Approach from Los Angeles and Everett says: “This one’s a belter, really super!”

Two others tickle his fancy. They are Kentridge (Lot 491) a beautiful colt by Paintre Celebre from Shadow Music, by Shadeed. His granddam produced a champion two-year-old filly in Canada and his pedigree contains a number of good US performers in the second and third dam.

Red Fort (Lot 455), is a Fort Wood colt from Tibouchina Stakes winner Red Dor. “He’s strong and scopy, a very nice colt who could be our sales-topper,” Everett commented.

Also worth a mention is Live Oak, the first foal of Quickwood, one of the best fillies Mary has raced in the last decade, sired by Tiger Ridge. Live Oak comes up as Lot 444 on Monday during Day Three of the Sale, don’t miss her!

Mary’s personal favourite is Salento, by Tiger Ridge (Lot 260). His dam Italia is a half-sister to well-performed sprinter and Graded-placed, Berlusconi, promising speed and more speed!
