The Thoroughbred Breeders' Association of South Africa 100 Years Book Launch

This book celebrates the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association’s centenary, and the last 100 years of the champions, breed-shapers, stalwarts and stud farms that helped define the Thoroughbred industry in South Africa.

While the Association was formed in 1920, there’s no complete picture without reaching further back into the past when men like Charles Southey, Henry Nourse, Sir Abe Bailey and Hilton Barber laid the solid foundations on which today’s industry is built. It is thanks to their perseverance and significant investment in farms and imported bloodstock against considerable odds, that it is possible to celebrate the South African Thoroughbred with this book.

“South Africa is a country of many colours, contrasts and languages. A favourite Afrikaans expression is to gift something with warm hands. It has been my enormous privilege and pleasure to assist with the compilation and editing of this volume. However, I have been a very small part of its journey. In the same way that it takes a village to raise a horse, this book would never have seen the light of day without the kind, generous and often tireless efforts of the great number of hands who have helped turn this wonderful initiative into a reality. We now pass it, warmly, from our hands to yours.”
