CAPE SALE GRADUATE LANDS MICHAELMAS HANDICAP

The quality of thoroughbred sold off Bloodstock South Africa’s annual Cape Yearling Sale was once again highlighted this weekend, when former Cape Sale graduate Blackball landed the Listed Michaelmas Handicap at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Sunday.

Bred by the Shirluck Stud, the five-year-old Blackball picked up the first feature win of his career, and his fifth victory overall, when he powered home to land Sunday’s 1900m feature by a length and three quarters over Paths Of Victory and Listed Michael Roberts Handicap victory Wealthy.

Trained by Gavin Van Zyl, and ridden to victory by red hot rider Warren Kennedy, Blackball races for Messrs Budlender, Brown, Rencken & Team G Racing.

A R150 000 buy from the 2016 Val De Vie Yearling Sale, Blackball’s latest win pushed his earnings to over R515 000.

One of 40 stakes winners for his sire Black Minnaloshe, Blackball is out of two time winning Kabool mare Kite Runner, and his siblings include G1 SA Derby runner up Rocketball and Listed Devon Air Stakes winner Maleficent.
