Malmoos Makes Impression On Debut

Pricey yearling buy Malmoos, the second top lot sold off the 2019 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale, stamped himself a horse to follow when he made a hugely impressive debut at Turffontein on Saturday afternoon.

The three-year-old Mike de Kock trained colt, who races for Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum, was all the rage for Saturday’s first race, the Itsarush.co.za Welcomes You Maiden Plate (1200m), and Malmoos duly delivered.

Under champion apprentice Luke Ferraris, the Varsfontein Stud bred colt stormed home to win as he liked by three and a half lengths, and Malmoos looks an intriguiging future prospect.

A son of multiple champion sire Captain Al, Malmoos was a R4 400 000 buy, when selling under the name of Vasco Da Gama, from the 2019 National Sale.

Bred on the same Captain Al/Fort Wood cross as G1 winners Captain America and William Longsword, the regally bred Malmoos is a full-brother to G3 East Cape Derby/G3 Lonsdale Stirrup Cup winner Captain Splendid.

Saturday’s impressive debut winner is out of the Spook Express Handicap winner Justthewayyouare, a half-sister to Varsfontein’s inform sire Master Of My Fate.
