The Australian bound Hawwaam, a graduate of the 2017 National Yearling Sale, made yet more headlines this weekend when the brilliant bay was named the Cape Breeders’ Horse Of The Year at a virtual ceremony held on Sunday evening.
Bred by Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein (themselves named the Cape’s Outstanding Breeders for 2019-2020), the Mike de Kock trained Hawwaam was also named Champion Older Male and Champion Middle Distance Horse for the past South African racing season.
The Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum owned Hawwaam enjoyed a superb season in 2019-2020, winning four of his six starts including the G1 World Sports Betting Premier’s Champions Challenge, G1 H F Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes and G2 Premier Trophy.
A R1 000 000 graduate of the National Sale, Hawwaam (South Africa’s Champion 3YO Colt of 2018-2019) has won ten of his 13 starts to date, for prize money of R6,769,775.
Hawwaam’s sire Silvano and dam Halfway To Heaven were named the Cape’s Stallion and Broodmare Of The Year at Sunday night’s ceremony respectively.
Other BSA graduates honoured included Vernichey (Champion 2 Year Old Filly), Celtic Sea (Champion Older Female), and Out Of Your League (Champion Stayer).
Sunday night’s awards acknowledged the performance of Cape-bred athletes over the season past, and unlike the Equus Awards took only performances up to 31 July 2020 into account.
