Susan Rowett’s Varsfontein Stud dominated the Kenilworth meeting with smashing wins from two of their colts – Malmoos and Varsfontein’s own Erik The Red completing the double.
A R4,4-million 2019 National Yearling Sales graduate, Malmoos owned by Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum and trained by Mike De Kock, remained unbeaten in his debut at Kenilworth to take the Gr2 Avontuur Estate Concorde Cup for trainer Mike De Kock. By Captain Al out of Justthewayyouare, a Gr3 winner as well, he remains unbeaten from four starts. His Gimmethegreenlight half-brother sold for R440 000 from the recent National 2YO Sale to Mano Pandaram.
Erik The Red, a possible future stallion prospect for Varsfontein, completed the double for the leading Cape breeders. Trained by Justin Snaith, the Captain Al colt won the CTS Cape Merchants (Grade 2) Powered By Gg Gaming (Handicap) – now an impressive 6-time winner from 9 starts, including the Epol Umkhomazi Stakes (Grade 2), a Gr3 and two Listed races. He has an impeccable pedigree, out of Gr1 winner Covenant by Western Winter.

Both colts are distantly related in their Varsfontein pedigrees, with Covenant appearing under the third dam of Justthewayyouare, the dam of Malmoos.
Congratulations to Susan Rowet, manager Carl De Vos and the Varsfontein team.
