A colt by former National Sale graduate, and Equus Champion, Vercingetorix, proved the star attraction at Sunday’s Cape Yearling Sale.
Already named Galic War (Lot 64), the sales topping colt was consigned to Sunday’s sale by Wilgerbosdrift, and he was knocked down to the Hollywood Syndicate for R375 000.
The well related Galic War is out of the winning Dynasty mare Oojoba, herself a daughter of G3 Flamboyant Stakes runner up Salsabeel, with the latter, in turn, a great granddaughter of G1 Cheveley Park Stakes queen Dead Certain.
Pleasingly, Sunday’s sales topping price of R375 000 topped the 2020 sales’ topper’s price, with Edgartown was knocked down for R360 000 at last year’s Cape Yearling Sale.
GMB Bloodstock purchased Sunday’s top priced filly -a What A Winter filly by the name of Inner Sense. The latter, consigned by Daytona Stud, was knocked down for R320 000 after coming up early in the sale as Lot 9.
Inner Sense is out of the Dynasty mare Frame Of Mind, a placed own sister to Drum Star Handicap third place getter Kilrain, and half-sister to the stakes placed pair of Rabbatache and Splendid Sun.
Despite taking place in a marketplace rattled by tough economic surroundings, as well as the ongoing COVID pandemic, there were a number of positives to take out of the 2021 Cape Yearling Sale, which took place, once again, at the magnificent Mistico Equestrian Centre.
The aggregate rose from R7.92 million in 2020 to R11.77 million this year, an impressive increase of 57 percent. Both the average and median rose markedly from 2020, with the average price at the 2021 Cape Yearling Sale standing at R84 071 (an increase of 27% on last year’s average of R66 555), and the median rising from R40 000 to R65 000.
Leading buyer at this year’s Cape Yearling Sale was Willem Ackerman, who purchased three yearlings for R690 000. Ackerman’s buys were headed by the sales’ second top lot Home Of The Brave (Lot 130) who was knocked down for R350 000. A colt by the exciting young Galileo horse The United States, Home Of The Brave was consigned to the sale by Connemara Stud, As Agent.
Mauritzfontein’s consistently successful stallion Ideal World, whose progeny have won the Met three times in the past six years, topped the sires chart by aggregate with his eight lots grossing R1.1 million.
Wilgerbosdrift enjoyed another fine sale, and led the vendors list, with the Piketberg farm selling 16 of their 20 yearlings, including the sales topping Vercingetorix colt, for R2.06 million.
The success of the 2021 Cape Yearling Sale bodes well for the upcoming National Yearling Sale, which is set to take place in Germiston on the 15th & 16th April.
