Fresh off enjoying a memorable recent graded stakes treble, Bloodstock South Africa sold thoroughbreds were again to the fore in Sunday’s Listed Michaelmas Handicap (1900m) at Hollywoodbets Greyville.

 

BSA graduates finished 1-2-4 in the 2021 Michaelmas Handicap, with Donald McDonald leading home runner up Wealthy and another Bloodstock South Africa sold thoroughbred, Native Tongue, finishing fourth.

 

The Gavin Van Zyl trained Donald McDonald, who holds an entry for the G1 Gauteng Summer Cup, showed plenty of courage in Sunday’s race.

Under Warren Kennedy, the lightly raced five-year-old dug down deep to withstand a strong challenge from fellow BSA graduate Wealthy and win by a head.

 

The gelded Donald McDonald, claiming the first feature race win of his career, has now won five of 11 starts.

 

Bred by Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein, Donald McDonald races for Messrs R G Coppin & J F & L M F Wernars.

 

He was a R425 000  buy from the 2018 National 2YO Sale when knocked down to Team G Racing.

 

A half-brother to the BSA sold dual Equus Champion Celtic Sea, Donald McDonald is the 28th stakes winner for Mauritzfontein’s resident stallion Ideal World.

The latter, also sire of South Africa’s reigning Horse Of The Year Rainbow Bridge, has five lots on the 2021 November Two Year Old Sale including a filly (Lot 52) out of a three-parts sister to star sprinter J J The Jet Plane, and a three-parts brother (Lot 97) to G3 winner Zen Arcade.
