DIGNITARY (SAF) 1918

DIGNITARY, the first South African bred horse to head the national sires list!  He finished 2nd on the list in 1928, 3rd in 1929, 2nd in 1930 & 1931, 3rd in 1932 & 1933, 1st in 1934, 3rd in 1935 & 1936 and 2nd in 1937.

DIGNITARY (SAF) 1918 a brown horse by GREATOREX (GB) out of DIGNITY (SAF) by MINOR FORFEIT (GB), an extremely well bred individual at that time, his mother, DIGNITY, was very successful on the track in South Africa and she also did extremely well as a broodmare.  DIGNITARY was bred and raced very successfully (a champion of his time) by Henry Nourse and stood at DWARSVLEI STUD when taking up stud duties in 1923, with his first crop of foals on the ground in 1924.  It must be said that he was given every opportunity at stud, receiving a large quota of Henry Nourse’s vast number of broodmares.

On record as having 15 of his sons take up stud duties in South Africa, the best of which was TENON, the broodmare sire of the great sprinter ROYAL AFFAIR (SAF) – stallion.  DIGNITARY is also on record as being the broodmare sire of 10 stallions at stud in South Africa.  If you look deep into the fascinating pedigree of the great JET MASTER (SAF) 1994, a bay horse by RAKEEN (USA) out of JET LIGHTNING (SAF) by ROLLINS (USA), you will find a daughter of DIGNITARY occupying the 6th remove on the dam side called MERRYMAKER.

DIGNITARY died in 1944, aged 26.
