ABADAN II (GB) 1947

ABADAN II (GB) 1947, a dark bay horse by PERSIAN GULF (GB) out of AFFAIR (GB) by FAIR TRIAL (GB), was bred by Lieutenant Colonel Giles Loder and won 8 races (full racing record in England attached below).

ABADAN (as he was known until his arrival in South Africa, when he became known as ABADAN II) did his first two seasons at stud in England, before being brought to South Africa by his owners, Mr. Allan Robertson (Stormfontein Stud) and his son, Mr. Alex Robertson (Vlakfontein Stud).

He was the first very successful son of PERSIAN GULF (GB) 1940 at stud in South Africa (there were 11 sons of Persian Gulf at stud in SA in total), out of the FAIR TRIAL mare, AFFAIR (the second dam was ARAMINTA by TETRATEMA, a son of THE TETRARCH).  The second very successful son of Persian Gulf to stand in South Africa was PERSIAN WONDER (GB) 1959 (closely related in pedigree structure to ABADAN II), out of the mare LILAC BELLE by PETITION (a son of FAIR TRIAL).  Persian Wonder’s second dam was BELLE TRAVERS by MR JINKS (a son of TETRATEMA by THE TETRARCH).

ABADAN II and PREAMBLE II (GB) 1952, another successful sire and broodmare sire in South Africa, shared the same third dam in their pedigrees, ARABELLA (GB) 1926, by BUCHAN (GB) 1916.  Daughters of ABADAN II produced many very good winners when put to PREAMBLE II, including the colts SWAFFAM 9 wins (Sire), SANTO DOMINGO 8 wins (Sire), HALESWORTH 8 wins, MONOLOGUE 9 wins, CAST AWAY 9 wins, NARCEINE 6 wins, PRECENTOR 6 wins, PREVUE 8 wins, THE MASTER 9 wins and the fillies FAIR SET 3 wins (Cape Fillies Nursery G1), SALLA 4 wins, LUNETTE 4 wins and PRETTY POLLY (the dam of POLLY BISQUI 13 wins).

Champion Sire in South Africa in 1960/61, he also featured regularly in the Top 10 – 5th 1957/58, 5th 1958/59, 2nd 1959/60, 6th 1961/62, 3rd 1962/63, 4th 1963/64, 4th 1964/65, 9th 1965/66, 2nd 1966/67and 2nd 1967/68.

He also did very well on the Champion Sire of Two Year Olds List, 3rd 1956/57, 2nd 1957/58, 4th 1958/59, 5th 1959/60, 13th 1960/61, 5th 1961/62, 2nd 1962/63, 6th 1963/64, 6th 1964/65, 2nd 1966/67, 12th 1967/68 and 12th 1968/69.

He made his first appearance on the Top Broodmare Sires List in 16th spot in the 1967/68 season.  He was then a regular, 5th 1968/69, 5th 1969/70, 2nd 1970/71, 2nd 1971/72, 3rd 1972/73, 2nd 1973/74, 1st 1974/75, 1st 1975/76, 1st 1976/77, 7th 1977/78, 8th 1978/79 and 13th 1979/80.

The sire of numerous very good horses, including – JELAL SHAH, PRAIRIE QUAIL, KERASON, KINGS LYNN, KINGSMEAD, LAMORNA, SINGE, DEMAIN, OVID, ABERFOYLE, PHILOMEL, PRESTIGE, CHIMBORAA, KINGS AGREE and RUNNYMEDE.

On record as having 10 of his sons stand at stud, as well as being the broodmare sire of a further 14 stallions at stud.
