KINGS PACT (SAF) 1950

The great filly KINGS PACT (SAF) 1950, a bay filly by HIS EXCELLENCY II (GB), out of MAGNA CARTA (GB), by WINDSOR LAD (GB).  She was bred by Mr. V.H. Russ at his Saulspoort Stud situated in Bethlehem in the Orange Free State.

HIS EXCELLENCY II (GB) 1941, bred by Mr. H.B. Joel, was the first of the 18 sons of NEARCO (ITY) 1935 that stood at stud in South Africa to commence stud duties here (first crop of foals on the ground in 1947).  Although his actual purchase price is not known, it was reported that Mr. V.H. Russ paid “a high figure” to secure the stallion.

His first small crop of foals in South Africa produced two very good colts, BIRTHDAY HONOUR (12 wins), and ENERGETIC (7 wins, including the 1949 Breeders Free Handicap, 1951 Peninsular Summer Handicap Group 2 and a 4th place in the Cape Derby).

His second crop included the good filly CROWNED HEAD (8 wins) and the colt RATAN (8 wins).

Four very good fillies came out of his third crop, COURT SCANDAL (10 wins), EXTRACT (15 wins), TEA FOR TWO (7 wins) and UNVEILING (7 wins).

Then came KINGS PACT from his fourth crop in 1950 and what a sensation on the tracks of South Africa she was!  Her 16 wins ranged over distances from 1000m to 2900m (full racing record attached below) and include victories in the following features: 1952 – Newbury Stakes, JG Hollis Memorial, Clairwood Winter Handicap (as a 2yo).  1953 – Chairmans Plate, Champion Stakes, Transvaal Sprint Handicap, Goodwood Stakes, Natal St Leger, Durban Civic Century Cup.  1954 – Champion Stakes.

Being a leased filly, Kings Pact returned to her breeder for her stud career.  She was barren in 1957 / 1958 / 1959 (to BLACK CAP (IRE) 1946 for all three coverings).  In 1960 she produced a colt by BLACK CAP called ROYAL MONARCH who won 8 races.  In 1961 she was sold on the Saulspoort Stud Dispersal Sale to Mr. D.B.F. Geldenhuys in foal to BLACK CAP, the result was a filly called KINGS CROWN who never won a race and had difficulty conceiving when used at stud.  In 1962 KINGS PACT produced a colt by ABADAN II called KINGS AGREE who won 13 races including the Cape Merchants (Sire).  Her last foal was a filly called QUEENS PACT by ABADAN II in 1963 who won 5 races, including the 1967 Majorca Stakes.  QUEENS PACT produced the 6 time winner, WELL CLEAR, by CLEAR NIGHT II (GB) when at stud.

Sadly KINGS PACT died on the 20th November 1963 just two weeks after foaling down with QUEENS PACT.
