NEW SOUTH WALES (GB) 1961

NEW SOUTH WALES (GB) 1961, a bay colt by ABERNANT (GB) out of ALOR STAR (GB) by ALYCIDON (GB), imported by Mr. Godfrey Gird in 1965 for his Wittehart Stud situated in Beaufort West.

He was by far the best of 8 sons of ABERNANT (GB) at stud in South Africa.

His great looks and tremendous quality seemed to pass on seamlessly to his impressive 2yo winners that came from his first crop foaled in 1966.   Wins came from the colts GAMESOME, GIDEON (won the JG Hollis Memorial), GREEN COUNTRY, GREEN OPAL (won the Joseph Dorfman Memorial) and the filly GAZANIA.  As a result he finished in 8th position on the SIRES OF WINNING TWO YEAR OLDS for the 1968/69 season.  He went on to win this 2yo championship title on two occasions (1975/76 & 1976/77).

At stud in South Africa for 12 seasons, NEW SOUTH WALES won the Champion Sire Of Winners title twice (1975/76 & 1976/77).  He was also the runner up 4 times, once to HIGH VELDT and three times to PERSIAN WONDER.

The daughters of NEW SOUTH WALES did extremely well as broodmares.  MASHKA produced the 1993 July Handicap winner DANCING DUEL (by DANCING CHAMP) and his full sister, the wonderful race filly / mare OLYMPIC DUEL, a 12 time winner (including 7 Group 1 wins).  His daughter WILD ASH (a 7 time winner, including the 1978 Cape Fillies Guineas) produced the 1985 Cape Met winner WILD WEST (by ROLAND GARDENS).  MILDENHALL, his 17 time winning daughter, produced THE RUTLAND ARMS (by ROYAL PREROGATIVE), who won 11 races, including the 1983 John Skeaping Trophy (Group 2) and the 1984 Sun International (Summer Cup) (Group 1).

NEW SOUTH WALES is on record as having had 12 of his sons stand as stallions at stud and was the broodmare sire of a further 2 stallions at stud.

Fertility problems unfortunately brought his stud career to an end when he was just 16 years old.  A truly memorable stallion who produced 45 stakes winners from just 178 runners.  He certainly added quality not quantity to the South African Stud Book.
