JOY II (GB) 1957

JOY II (GB) 1957, a bay colt by DJEBE (FR) out of PERFUME II (GB) by BADRUDDIN (FR), was imported by Mr. Archie Dell in 1961 for his PLATBERG STUD in Colesberg.

JOY II was the only son of his sire DJEBE (FR) 1945 to stand at stud in South Africa.  DJEBE was by DJEBEL (FR) 1937, who was by the great French stallion TOURBILLON (FR) 1928.  The sire line, with its strong link to the highly regarded French breeder, Marcel Boussac, was one that South African breeders were very familiar with.  Two imported sons of Tourbillon, MARCIUS (FR) 1934 and DJASK (FR) 1942 had already been successful here, as had three sons of Djebel, ASTALE (FR) 1946, OLEAN (FR) 1952 and DJEREL (FR) 1957 (to a lesser extent).

* MY BABU (FR) 1945 (previously called LERINS), a very successful sire in the UK (a sire of sires), was the older ¾ brother to JOY II.  He was sold to Leslie Combs II and John W. Hanes (for $600000) in 1955 and sent to the USA to stand at their Spendthrift Farm in 1957, where he continued his successful career as a sire.  MY BABU had two sons that stood in South Africa, ANKARA II (GB) 1957 and DIONISIO (IRE) 1953 (a beautiful stallion and similar in type to JOY II), sire of the 13 time winner HIGH GLOW (SAF) 1969 (won the 1977 Diadem Stakes), who was trained by the Cape Town trainer Athol Fisher, and his wife Margaret.  MY BABU was also the broodmare sire of three stallions at stud in South Africa, DION (GB) 1960, BARRONS COURT (GB) 1966 and MARAZION (GB) 1960.  It is the latter, who began his stud career in Australia, which is the most interesting.  While in Australia MARAZION sired a chestnut filly that was purchased at an auction by Pat O’Neill and her mother Lady Kenmare who owned BROADLANDS STUD.  The filly was brought back to South Africa and named MISS LINDEMAN (AUS) 1968.  She was a champion race filly here trained by Pat O’Neill before retiring to stud at Broadlands.  Pat returned to Australia in 1973 and purchased another daughter of MARAZION’s called JACKIE BABY.  While there, Pat acquired MARAZION (13 years old at the time) as well and brought him back to stand at Broadlands. He only did two seasons at Broadlands before he died in 1976, but from his first crop here in 1974 came the fabulous sprinting filly MARYSA.  MY BABU was also the second dam sire of the legendary SENTINEL (SAF) 1968.

JOY II got off to a cracking start at stud with 9 2yo winners from his first crop, which saw him finish in 2nd position on the Champion Two Year Old Sire for the 1964/65 season.  He was the Champion Two Year Old Sire for 1965/66 and achieved a spot in the Top 3 on four other occasions.

He finished in the Top 10 of the Champion Sire Of Winners list on eight occasions.  He was a fantastic broodmare sire for many years and a wonderful source of speed in a pedigree.  JOY II’s son DOUBLE EAGLE won the famous match race with JOLLY DRUMMER (two outstanding speedsters of their day).

The second dam in the pedigree of the great JET MASTER (SAF) 1994 is a mare called JOLLY LAUGHTER, who was by JOLLY DRUMMER, out of the JOY II mare called LETS LAUGH.

His two time winning daughter FOUNTAINS produced DAMBUSTER (SAF) 1978 by SLEDGEHAMMER (NZ) 1970, who won 12 races including the 1981 Scottsville Sprint, 1981 Golden Spur (Gilbeys), 1983 Golden Spur (Gilbeys) and the 1984 Frank Lambert Stakes

A wonderful stallion indeed!
