FOVEROS (GB) 1976, a brown colt by AVEROF (GB) out of CAMINA BAY (GB) by WHISTLING WIND (IRE), was bred by the WARREN HILL STUD in Newmarket, England. Before his arrival in South Africa, early in 1981, he had raced in England and France (won 3 races). In South Africa FOVEROS raced in the colours of the JR Syndicate (Nominee Mr. Jim Redman) and was trained by the legendary Natal trainer Herman Brown. He won 5 races here, including the 1981 Germiston November Handicap, 1981 Hawaii Stakes, 1982 Queen’s Plate and the 1982 J&B Cape Met. The wonderfully polished and talented Basil Marcus was his regular jockey.
His ½ sister, AEGEAN BEAUTY (GB) 1979 (by SHARPEN UP out of CAMINA BAY), followed him to South Africa and she won 3 races here. His father, AVEROF (GB) 1971 (by SING SING, a great grandson of HYPERION (GB) 1930), who was a successful sire in the UK, also stood at stud in South Africa at BROADLANDS STUD with Pat O’Neill from 1983 until 1992.
He retired to stud in 1982 and initially stood in the Cape at ZEVENBERGEN STUD, owned by Jan and Robbie de Clercq, before being relocated to the Scott Bros. HIGHDOWN STUD in Nottingham Road, Natal.
At stud for 12 full seasons from 1982 to 1994, he was the Champion Sire Of South Africa 8 times (1988/89, 1990/91, 1991/92, 1993/94, 1994/95, 1995/96, 1996/97, 1997/98), as well as being the runner up 3 times (1987/88, 1989/90, 1992/93). FOVEROS was also an extremely successful broodmare sire.
