Bloodstock South Africa enjoyed another notable G1 triumph when BSA graduate Pomp And Power ran out a hugely impressive winner of the G1 Jonsson Workwear Cape Derby (2000m) run at Kenilworth on Saturday.
The Justin Snaith trained gelding, ridden from off the pace for a change, was given a patient ride by Richard Fourie.
Fourie settled Pomp And Power well off the front running Universal, before he brought his progressive charge with a sustained late run down the inside of the track, and Pomp And Power stormed home to land the 2022 Cape Derby by a length and a half.
Bred by Maine Chance Farms who enjoyed a phenomenal day with three Group winners including Princess Calla and Cosmic Highway, Pomp And Power was a R250 000 buy from the 2020 National Yearling Sale, and is yet another wonderful advertisement for South Africa’s oldest premier sale (This year’s National Sale is set to take place at the TBA complex on April 28th-29th). Saturday’s win was his third graded stakes score, with Pomp And Power having previously triumphed in this season’s G2 Concorde Cup and last season’s G3 Goals And Gallops Langerman.
Pomp And Power, who has now won five of nine starts and has earned in excess of R1 000 000, races for Greg Bortz, Etienne Braun and Greenacres Trust.
He is the fourth G1 winner sired by Maine Chance Farms’ champion sire elect, and former National Sale buy, Vercingetorix, and is out of the Candy Stripes mare Peru. The latter, a half-sister to champion filly Paraca, is also dam of Pomp And Power’s talented three-parts brother, and G1 Vodacom Durban July runner up, Punta Arenas, as well as promising two-year-old Pucallpa.
It was another magnificent weekend for Bloodstock South Africa -with BSA graduates also landing all three Listed races run at Turffontein on Sunday.
The Boland Stud bred filly River Queraress, a R250 000 buy from last year’s National Sale, made it three wins in a row when she captured Sunday’s Listed Ruffian Stakes for Paul Peter, Warren Kennedy and SSM Racing Syndicate (Nom: Mr A Chadha).
Fellow BSA buy Karangetang provided his Maine Chance Farms sire Erupt with his first stakes winner when that Johan Janse Van Vuuren trained colt won the Listed Storm Bird Stakes at Turffontein. Bred by Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein, Karangetang was knocked down to Vermaak Equine for R300 000 at the 2021 National Yearling Sale.
Ndoro Stud bred Heavens Girl joined the list of recent Bloodstock South Africa sold thoroughbreds to win a feature race when the 2021 G2 4Racing SA Fillies Nursery winner swept home to land Sunday’s Listed Bauhinia Handicap.
The daughter of ill-fated champion Soft Falling Rain, another trained by Paul Peter and ridden by Warren Kennedy, was knocked down to her trainer for R110 000 and races for Messrs Marc Peter, John-Paul Peter & D T Peter.
