Mike Rattray Passes Away

Mr Mike Rattray, one of the doyens of South African racing, passed away after a lengthy illness.
Mike Rattray was one of South Africa’s leading owners and breeders for decades, a successful businessman and founder of the famous Mala Mala game reserve. He was also a past Chairman of the Durban Turf Club. A Springbok polo player, he was life chairman of the South African Polo Association.
Mr Rattray operated the iconic Lammerskraal Stud for many years where he stood the flagship stallion Western Winter.
He unfortunately did not realise his one ambition in life and that was to win the Durban July. Celtic Grove and Yard-Arm both finishing second.
He owned an array of successful race horses, including his most recent success, Equus Champion Horse Of The Year Rainbow Bridge.
Our condolences to Mike’s wife Norma, his seven children and 18 grandchildren.
