HONG KONG TRIUMPH FOR BLOODSTOCK SOUTH AFRICA

A great weekend for graduates of Bloodstock South Africa auctions was crowned when BSA graduate Apex Top won in Hong Kong on Sunday.

The now seven-year-old raced just off the pace early in Sunday’s Chevalier Insurance Handicap before hitting the front a furlong from home and going on to score by a head.

Ridden to victory by the South African born Luke Ferraris, the South African bred Apex Top is trained by another South African born, in the form of Douglas Whyte.

Bred by Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein, Apex Top, who went through the ring under the name of Lohengrin, has now won three times in Hong Kong, with the gelding having amassed earnings of HK$2,612,490.

Apex Top, a R550 000 buy from the 2018 National Yearling Sale, races for Arthur Tsoi Tai Kwan, Johnny Chan Chi Kwong, Bruce Tsoi Shing Hong & Paco Chan Pak Hou.

Sunday’s winner is a son of Wilgerbosdrift’s hugely successful sire Flower Alley and top broodmare Cosima Liszt. A daughter of Rich Man’s Gold, Cosima Liszt is no stranger to having her progeny finding the winners enclosure in Hong Kong, and is also responsible for Hong Kong G3 winner Nassa, as well as G1 Summer Cup hero Wagner.
