One World: Emulating the Legendary Captain Al at Drakenstein Stud

In South African Thoroughbred racing, the legacy of Captain Al hailing from Klawervlei Stud looms large as a sire of sires and broodmare sire.

Captain Al set a benchmark of 22 individual winners in 2003/04. However, at Drakenstein Stud, a new chapter in this storied lineage is being written by none other than One World, a stallion who has recently equaled and surpassed his sire’s remarkable record of producing the most 2-year-old winners in a single season, with a double at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Tuesday taking One World’s total of individual winners to 24.

That double includes Worldcraft who is aptly trained by Vaughan Marshall – nobody knows Captain Al better than Vaughan, who also trained One World and looks to be keeping the legacy going with his progeny.

Nestled in the picturesque Franschoek, Drakenstein Stud has always been a beacon of excellence in South African horse racing and have again bettered their previous season, achieving a record 21 Black Type winners for the season and 30 in total. The stud’s dedication to breeding champions is exemplified in One World, whose pedigree and performance have always hinted at potential greatness. Trained by the astute Vaughan Marshall, One World’s journey from promising young colt to record-equalling stallion is a promising start.

One World is out of Giant’s Causeway mare Aquilonia. As a broodmare sire according to bloodhorse.com, the stallion Giants Causeway trained by Aidan O’Brien was fondly known as the ‘Iron Horse’ in training and has produced 151 Stakes Winners as a broodmare sire to date.

Among One World’s best racing performers are names that have already begun to carve their own niches in the racing scene. One Stripe trained by Vaughan Marshall is a winner of two Gr3’s to date, the Gr3 Cape Of Good Hope Nursery and Gr3 Winter Nursery.

Sahara Cat has won two of her four starts, yet to be out of the money and placed third in the Irridescence Stakes (Listed) recently. One World’s leading lights of the season include Lion Rampart, Miss World and All Out For Six. Currently One World is boasting a winners to runners percentage of 44% and an incredible R80,413 Average Earnings Per Runner.

One World is well represented at the upcoming KZN Yearling Sale with 12 yearlings on offer from a variety of farms. Klawervlei Stud have an interesting colt on offer, a first produce out of Frankel mare Quite Frankly, while Blue Sky have a colt on offer that is a half brother to 4 winners. Keivan Stud have a colt on consigned that is a half brother to the exported Marshall, from the family of Asiatic Boy.

One World will be standing at Drakenstein Stud for a fee of R60 000 live foal this season.
