Mauritzfontein’s star broodmare Nother Russia, the dam of US export Gimme A Nother, enjoyed two winners during the week with gelding Molotov Cocktail and half-sister, Sharapova.
After finishing less then two lengths off the winner on debut, Molotov Cocktail, by Danon Platina, followed up in his second start for Fred Crabbia’s Alac (Pty) Ltd to win at the Vaal over 1400m for trainers Brett and James Crawford and looks a progressive type for the future.
Sharapova (Querari) followed up a day later at Fairview, winning for the third time in her consistent career. From 24 starts, she has won three times and only missed a cheque on four occasions. Incredibly, of all her places, eight of them were in second place! The five year old mare is trained by Alan Greeff for Mauritzfontein.
Unbeaten in South Africa, Gimme A Nother has had two starts in the USA under Jessica and Steven Jell’s overseas operation, Newstead Stables LLC, finishing second in both of her starts. Her last race at Churchill Downs saw her make up plenty of ground, coming from last approximately 15 lengths off to finish in second place. She is trained by Graham Motion, conditioner of Isivunguvungu and Beach Bomb and her next start could be at the beginning of June.
Nother Russia is back in foal to Gimmethegreenlight for the 2025 foaling season.
