Legislate Sires First Grade 1 Winner with Good For You

Cheveley Stud’s resident stallion, Legislate—a multiple Grade 1-winning son of Dynasty—reached a significant milestone over the weekend as his progeny, Good For You, clinched victory in the Grade 1 Gold Medallion at Hollywoodbets Scottsville.

Trained by Glen Kotzen and owned by Messrs Deven Govender, R P Macnab, S Poriazis, Sivan Ramsamy & S L Russo, many of whom were celebrating their first Gr1 win, the two-year-old colt showcased his class by delivering a commanding performance, securing his place among South Africa’s elite juveniles under a memorable ride from Chad Little, who enjoyed a double on the day. The colt was a R300 000 purchase form Oldlands Stud off the National Yearling Sale and took his earnings to R1,139,788.

Good For You is out of the mare Slightly Blonde, from the family of Captain’s Gal, Netta and Cirillo. Oldlands Stud, owned by mother and son duo Barbara and Professor Ian Sanne, are no strangers to producing Gr1 winners and their notable progeny includes Sanshaawes, Lucky Find, Canadian Summer, English Garden, Zarina and Hotarubi.

Legislate’s achievement as a sire of a Grade 1 winner underscores his value in the breeding shed. Standing at Cheveley Stud in the Western Cape, Legislate has been steadily building his reputation over the years, and Good For You’s success is a testament to his ability to pass on his exceptional qualities to his offspring. Legislate’s most notable progeny include Hoedspruit, Runaway Song and Speed Machine, and the more recent Blue Sky-bred Legal Counsel.

Legislate’s stats are impressive, his Average Earnings Per Runner is R100,833 and he has a 36% winners to runners percentage for the current season. At the National Yearling Sale earlier this year, a yearling bred by Ndoro Stud sold for R700 000 to Rakesh Singh, his yearlings averaging R460 000 each.

Legislate stood for a fee of R25 000 excl vat in 2024.
