On Sunday, 27 July 2025, a momentous occasion unfolded in South African sport as legendary horse racing trainer Mike de Kock was officially inducted into the South African Hall of Fame.

The induction took place in front of an enthusiastic crowd at the World Pool Gold Cup Raceday at Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse – a fitting stage for a man whose name is etched into the very fabric of international horse racing.

Mike de Kock’s induction is a celebration of a career that spans over three decades, five continents, and 3,803 career wins. His legacy is one of excellence, global impact, and relentless pursuit of greatness.

On the very day of his induction into the South African Hall of Fame, Mike de Kock’s training legacy was on full display at Greyville Racecourse. In the prestigious Grade 1 World Pool Champion Stakes for two-year-olds, rising star Jan Van Goyen, trained by Mike and his son Mathew de Kock, and ridden by jockey Callan Murray, delivered a commanding performance to claim victory in 1 minute and 37.63 seconds. Remaining unbeaten in his third career start, Jan Van Goyen fended off strong Group 1 contenders with maturity beyond his years. The win served as a powerful and poetic tribute to de Kock’s impact on the sport.

Born on 14 February 1964 in Alberton, de Kock’s passion for horse racing was ignited early. After learning the ropes in the army’s equestrian unit, he launched his training career in 1987 with his first winner, Evening Mist — who also became his first Grade 1 victor.

What followed was nothing short of extraordinary. De Kock has achieved:

  • 3,803 career wins
  • 141 Grade/Group 1 victories
  • 8-time South African National Champion Trainer
  • The second-most successful trainer in Dubai Racing Carnival history
