One Stripe Draws Pole Position In Breeders Cup Mile On Turf

One Stripe, by One World and bred by Drakenstein Stud, has drawn in first place for the Breeders Cup Fanduel Mile on Turf. Owned in partnership by Equus Champion Owners of last season, Hollywood Racing in partnership with Rikesh Sewgoolam, the colt is currently at odds of 30-1, will be ridden by Juan Hernandez for trainer Graham Motion.

Breederscup.com talk about One Stripe:

“One Stripe (SAF) looks like part of a building wave of South African exports heading for top competition around the globe.

With a recent easing of export regulations, South African connections, after more than a decade of frustration, have a bit more freedom of movement and One Stripe’s itinerary points directly to Del Mar and the $2 million FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) on Nov. 1.

The colt is from the first crop of One World (SAF), himself a well-bred product of the country’s strong breeding industry.

One Stripe flashed his potential with a victory in the Cape Guineas (G1) Dec. 14, rallying stoutly from near the back of the field, switching to the stands-side rail and just up in the final strides to win by 1 1/4 lengths. He followed that on Jan. 4 by winning the [L’Ormarins] King’s Plate (G1) [Breeders Cup Win And You’re In Series Challenge], squeezing through between rivals for a 1 3/4-length score, becoming just the third 3-year-old winner in the history of that race, per Racing Post.

After that run, he was purchased by Hollywood Racing, a syndicate headed by Owen Heffer with an international eye and a focus on the Breeders’ Cup.

With his transport warming up, One Stripe then took on the HSH Princess Charlene Big Cap as the overwhelming favorite, looking to head out of Africa a winner. That dream screenplay was erased in the stretch as jockey Gavin Larena was forced to take up abruptly in a chain-reaction traffic jam and One Stripe had to settle for sixth.

As an indicator of One World’s sire potential, another of his offspring, All Out For Six (SAF), ran on to win the Big Cap.

One Stripe arrived in the United States in July and joined trainer Graham Motion’s string at the Fair Hill Training Center in Maryland. One Stripe made his North American debut on Sept. 13 in Canada in the Woodbine Mile (G1) in which he finished fifth in the field of nine, 5 lengths behind the victorious Notable Speech (GB).

One Stripe’s dam, Silver Stripe (SAF), is a daughter of another South African bloodstock stalwart, Silvano (GER). Silvano traveled the globe, competing in Hong Kong, Singapore, Dubai and Australia. In a 2001 visit to the United States, he won the Arlington Million (G1) by 3 lengths, then finished second behind With Anticipation in the Man o’ War Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park.”

One Stripe sold for R100 000 off the Bloodstock South Africa 2023 August 2YO Sale, knocked down to Grant Knowles’ Central Route Trading. His next sales appearance was at the Cape Racing Ready To Run Sale, where he sold for R1,4-million knocked down to trainer Vaughan Marshall, who trained One World to multiple Gr1 victories, consigned by Soetendal as agent.

His dam is a 3-time winner, including winning the Turffontein Spook Express Listed, whilst his second dam is Badger’s Gift – an 8-time winner including the Gr1 Paddock Stakes. According to the www.nhra.co.za website, Mr Sewgoolam now owns Silver Stripe and she has visited One World in 2024 and 2025, the 2024 mating producing Una Raya, a filly.

His Erik The Red half brother Vapour Trail is Merit Rated at 101, owned by Mr Sewgoolam and trained by Vaughan Marshall, the gelding who is a three-parts brother to One Stripe through Captain Al on his paternal side, placed in the Gr3 Langerman just under a length off the winner.

We are immensely proud to see One Stripe flying the South African flag on one of the greatest stages in world racing. His participation in the Breeders’ Cup is not only a tribute to his own class, but a reflection of the quality of bloodstock being bred in South Africa,” said Bradley Ralph, Chairman of the South African Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association.

GIMME A NOTHER SCRATCHED

Daily Racing Form have published the scratching of Gimme A Nother (Gimmethegreenlight – Nother Russia by Tiger Ridge), who was amongst the pre-entries for the Breeders Cup Fillies & Mares Turf.

“Gimme a Nother was not shipped from trainer Graham Motion’s base in Maryland because of a minor splint bone injury, Motion said Monday.”

Gimme a Nother won the Gr2 John C. Mabee Stakes on 6 September at Del Mar, her first win in the United States in her fifth start in the country after placing second in a Gr2 at Woodbine in Canada.

“She was briefly out of training following that race and resumed workouts in early October at Motion’s base at the Fair Hill Training Center in Maryland. The injury was detected after a half-mile workout last Friday. Motion said the splint bone was a concern after the race at Del Mar. “It settled down and it flared after the last work,” he said.

Gimme a Nother, winner of two Gr1 races for fillies and mares in South Africa and unbeaten prior to export, has won 8 of 12 starts and earned $423,773. She races for Jessica and Steven Jell’s Newstead Stables,  bred by Wilgerbosdrift and Mauritzfontein in South Africa. She will remain in training for 2026.
