Mauritzfontein’s stalwart stallion Ideal World enjoyed a headline-making afternoon at Turffontein on Saturday when his tough four-year-old daughter Mocha Blend produced a stunning upset to capture the G1 Betway Summer Cup (2000m)at odds of 100-1.
The victory elevated Mocha Blend to Ideal World’s 34th stakes winner and remarkably his fourth G1 winner, underlining the influence the veteran sire continues to exert late in his career.
For trainer Frank Robinson and jockey Tristan Godden, the filly’s triumph marked their first success at G1 level. Godden delivered a cool and courageous ride, saving ground down the inside before being forced to angle out sharply when The Equator drifted, while Andrew Fortune unleashed a strong run on the 40-1 outsider Olivia’s Way. Mocha Blend responded willingly, surging again in the final strides to secure the R6 million feature by half a length.
Bred and owned by Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein, the filly has now won three of her nine starts, and Saturday’s career-defining victory boosted her earnings to R3 739 213. She is one of two Ideal World runners that lined up for the Summer Cup and is out of the Silvano mare Mocha Special.
With her name now added to a roll of honour that includes champions Rainbow Bridge and Smart Call, as well as G1 SA Derby hero Samurai Warrior, Mocha Blend has further reinforced Ideal World’s reputation as a sire capable of producing elite performers at the highest level.
Horses sold off Bloodstock South Africa auctions won all of Saturday’s G3 Ducat Africa Fillies Mile, G3 New Turf Carriers Merchants and Listed Blu Voucher Carry On Alice Stakes on Betway Summer Cup day.
Exciting three-year-old filly Hazy Dazy bounced back to winning ways when she won Saturday’s Ducat Africa Fillies Mile. In the process, she provided Trent Mayhew with the 50th winner of his career. Trained by Corne Spies, Hazy Dazy scored an emotional victory in Saturday’s R500 000 when she stormed home to beat the blue blooded Charge It by a length. Bred by Breedon Stud Close Corporation, the daughter of Act Of War was a bargain R37 500 purchase from the 2023 December Online Auction. Hazy Dazy, who has won four of just six starts and has earned R484 237, races for Mr D Dasrath & Mrs C Dasrath, Messrs R P Macnab, S Poriazis, Vikash Sobaren, X Spies & D Vayapuri. Trained by Tony Peter for Suzette Viljoen, the Buffalo Bill Cody sired four-year-old showed the benefits of a gelding operation when he ran on strongly, under Richard Fourie, to claim Saturday’s R550 000 feature by nearly three-parts of a length. Bred by Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein, Pistol Pete has now won six of 16 starts (including the 2024 G3 Betway Lebelo Sprint) for earnings of R1,032,062. From the same female line as breed shaping sire Pivotal, Pistol Pete is out of the stakes placed Tiger Ridge mare Oklahoma Sky.
Star mare Mia Moo, a R300 000 buy from the 2022 National Yearling Sale, showed her class when she won Saturday’s Listed Blu Voucher Carry On Alice Stakes. Trained, like Carry On Alice, by Sean Tarry, the five-year-old daughter of Vercingetorix made light of a layoff and 61.5kgs when romping home, under Richard Fourie, to win by nearly three-parts of a length. Having her first start for new owners Drakenstein Stud, Mia Moo has now won seven of 18 starts, with her victories headed by last season’s G1 South African Fillies Sprint. Bred by Klawervlei Stud, the five-year-old, who has earned R1,538,325, is out of Listed Irridescence Stakes winner Leeward.
