The 2026 Bloodstock South Africa August Two Year Old Sale provided a welcome show of strength for the South African thoroughbred industry, with record turnover, spirited competition for quality stock and encouraging commercial results for breeders both large and small.
Held at the TBA Sales Complex in Germiston on 20 and 21 August, the sale recorded turnover of R106,12-million, an increase of 32% on the R80,505-million achieved in 2025. The average climbed 12% to R351,391, while the median settled at R225,000.
At the head of the market was Lot 316, Ragazzino, the Vercingetorix colt out of the Gr2-winning Gimmethegreenlight mare Ciao Bella, offered by Varsfontein Stud and knocked down to Form Bloodstock for R6-million.
Ragazzino boasts a pedigree to match his price tag. His dam is a daughter of multiple Gr1 winner and Equus Champion Bela-Bela, while Ciao Bella herself won the Gr2 Western Cape Fillies Championship, descending from the famed Mystic Spring family which boasts recent Gr1 winners and stallion prospects, Eight On Eighteen and Snow Pilot.
Reigning Champion Sire Vercingetorix enjoyed an exceptional sale, with all eight of his lots offered finding buyers for an aggregate of R16,2-million and an outstanding average of R2,025-million.
His influence was evident at both ends of the gender divide, with the R6-million Ragazzino topping the sale, while a Vercingetorix filly out of Champion Broodmare Palace Of Dreams, offered by Millstream Farm, realised R2,6-million to Form Bloodstock.
The filly is a full-sister to Gr1 SA Classic winner Grand Empire and Equus Champion Palace Of Arvernia out of recently crowned Equus Broodmare Of The Year, Palace Of Dreams, providing another significant commercial result for one of the country’s outstanding female families.
Millstream Farm enjoyed further success with a Rafeef colt out of Keep On Dancing by Silvano from the family of In The Fast Lane, who realised R1,6-million to Hollywood Racing, giving the operation two seven-figure results at the sale.
While the established Vercingetorix dominated proceedings, there was also considerable interest in the first two year olds by a new generation of South African stallions.
The 2026 catalogue included members of the first crops of Digital Age, Eden Roc, Got The Greenlight, Jet Dark, Kommetdieding and Master Archie.
Among the notable results was Lot 302, a colt from the first crop of Mauritzfontein’s Gr1-winning son of Invincible Spirit, Digital Age.
Out of the Captain Al mare Captain’s Lullaby and offered by Boland Stud, the colt was knocked down for an impressive R1-million.
Captain’s Lullaby was herself stakes performed and has already produced a number of winners, giving the R1-million colt plenty of substance on the dam’s side of his pedigree.
Digital Age, a Gr1 Turf Classic Stakes winner in the United States, will have his first South African runners during the 2026/27 season, making the commercial response to his progeny particularly noteworthy.
Dual Horse Of The Year Jet Dark was another young stallion to make an encouraging impression.
A Jet Dark colt out of Listed winner Duchess Of Bourbon, offered by Boland Stud, realised R950,000 to De Kock Racing.
The colt comes from an accomplished female family, with Duchess Of Bourbon, a daughter of Duke Of Marmalade, belonging to the family of Equus Champion and international Gr1 winner Soft Falling Rain.
With Jet Dark’s first crop also approaching the racetrack, the result provided an encouraging early vote of confidence in the five-time Gr1 winner.
One of the most pleasing aspects of the sale was the spread of notable results among breeders and vendors outside the very largest consignments.
KwaZulu-Natal’s Blue Sky Thoroughbreds enjoyed an excellent result when their Declarationofpeace colt out of the Crusade mare Silent Crusade, offered by Blue Sky Thoroughbreds, sold to AG Racing for R900,000.
For Blue Sky, the result provided a significant return and another reminder that quality individuals from smaller breeding operations can compete strongly in an increasingly selective market.
Boland Stud’s results were similarly noteworthy. In addition to its R950,000 Jet Dark colt, the farm offered the R1-million Digital Age colt, putting the operation firmly among the notable performers of the sale and giving two exciting young stallions valuable commercial results.

Form Bloodstock emerged as the sale’s leading buyer, securing eight lots for an aggregate of R14,505-million.
Its purchases included the two highest-priced horses highlighted by Vercingetorix — the R6-million Ragazzino, offered by Varsfontein Stud, and the R2,6-million Vercingetorix filly out of Palace Of Dreams, offered by Millstream Farm.
Hollywood Racing was the second-leading buyer, purchasing five lots for R6-million, providing further evidence of strong investment in quality South African bloodstock.
Varsfontein Stud emerged as the sale’s leading vendor, selling 26 lots for R21-million, at an impressive average of R807,692.
It was a particularly fitting result for the Paarl nursery, whose draft was headed by the R6-million sale-topper Ragazzino.
Millstream Farm finished second on the vendors’ table, with 12 lots sold for R7,135-million, while Wilgerbosdrift was close behind with an aggregate of R7,125-million.
For breeders, the importance of the 2026 August Two Year Old Sale extended well beyond the spectacular R6-million top price.
A record R106,12-million aggregate, a higher average, strong competition for well-bred individuals and meaningful prices achieved across the spectrum all pointed towards confidence in the South African thoroughbred.
