JUBIE (GB) 1933

JUBIE (GB) 1933, a bay colt by BIRIBI (FR) out of JURA (GB) by GAINSBOROUGH (GB).  A very interesting stallion who was brought to South Africa as a 4yo in 1937 by Sir Abe Bailey.

He raced in South Africa on his arrival, running 2nd to MOONLIT (SAF) 1932 in the 1938 Cape Met and winning once over 16 furlongs (3200m) before heading off to stud in 1940.  JUBIE had his first crop of foals on the ground in 1941 and produced his last foal in 1959, aged 26 years old.

His father BIRIBI (FR) 1923 was by RABELAIS (GB) 1900, a son of the legendary ST SIMON (GB) 1881.  BIRIBI was seized by the Germans during WWII in 1940 and taken to Germany.  He died in 1946 shortly after he had been returned to France by the Germans.

JUBIE’s mother, JURA (GB) 1921, hails from one the best female families of the 20th Century, headed by the great race mare, SCEPTRE (GB) 1899.  SCEPTRE had incredible success while racing (13 wins – 4 of them were British Classics) including winning the following races:  Woodcote Stakes (1901), July Stakes (1901), 2,000 Guineas (1902), 1,000 Guineas (1902), Epsom Oaks (1902), St. James’s Palace Stakes (1902), Nassau Stakes (1902), St. Leger (1902), Hardwicke Stakes (1903), Jockey Club Stakes (1903), Duke of York Stakes (1903), Champion Stakes (1903).

SCEPTRE had 8 foals while at stud (1 colt and 7 fillies), none of them as good as her as racehorses, but her daughters, headed by MAID OF THE MIST (GB) 1906, the dam of JUBIE’s mother, JURA, really excelled as broodmares (MAID OF THE MIST did win the 1908 Cheveley Park Stakes and the 1909 Nassau Stakes).

Although JUBIE never won the South African Champion Sire title, he did finish runner up to ASBESTOS II in the 1946/47 season and also consistently featured in the Top 10 on a number of occasions.  He was the Champion Broodmare Sire Of South Africa for the 1964/65 season as well as featuring regularly in the Top 10 of that category.  He was a broodmare sire of note!

JUBIE is on record as having 6 of his sons stand as stallions at stud.  He was also the broodmare sire of a further 11 stallions at stud.

JUBIE’s stud career spanned 18 years, although his last 5 crops were very small.  In an attempt to try and place a bit of perspective on the success aspect of his stud career (realising of course that he was largely from a different era), JUBIE ranks above stallions like JOY II, FOVEROS, NOBLE CHIEFTAIN, JUNGLE COVE, ROYAL PREROGATIVE, DRUM BEAT, FORT WOOD, AL MUFTI and NORTHERN GUEST on a PERCENTAGE OF GROUP 1 WINS TO NUMBER OF RUNNERS basis.

He died at CLEWER STUD at the grand old age of 27.
