Lammerskraal Stud-bred Viva Asterix made an eye-catching winning debut at Hollywoodbets Durbanville on Saturday, adding another exciting prospect to the record of his Gr1 winning dam Viva Maria.

By Champion Sire Vercingetorix out of the Jet Master mare Viva Maria, Viva Asterix is a full-brother to the talented Viva’s Liberte, whose 3yo season included a fourth place finish in the Gr1 Hollywoodbets Durban July.

The family has also commanded considerable attention in the sales ring. Viva’s Liberte was purchased for R2,1-million by Form Bloodstock, while Viva Asterix was consigned by Lammerskraal Stud and sold for R2,8-million, once again to Form Bloodstock at the 2025 Bloodstock South Africa National Yearling Sale. Both Viva’s LIberte and Viva Asterix are trained by Candice Bass and owned by Khaya Stables.

Viva Maria, herself winner of the Gr1 Woolavington 2000, has certainly continued to make her mark at stud, previously producing Sovereign Spirit and Silver Maria.
