JUNGLE COVE (USA) 1966

JUNGLE COVE (USA) 1966, a bay colt by BOLD RULER (USA) out of SANTORIN (USA) by GREEK SONG (USA).  He was imported by the Scott Bros. and syndicated by them in 1976 as a 10yo stallion who had already done three seasons at stud in the USA.  He initially stood in Natal at the Scott Bros. Highdown Stud in Nottingham Road, before being relocated to Maine Chance in the Cape.

He was one of the four sons of BOLD RULER (USA) 1954 who stood at stud in South Africa and the second of the two Bold Ruler sons to win the Champion Sire Of South Africa title.  PLUM BOLD (USA) 1969 beat him to championship honours by one year and was the first American bred stallion to do so in South Africa (JUNGLE COVE was the second).

The impressive winners that came from his first crop of foals in South Africa in 1977 instantly established a keen interest in him as a sire from breeders, owners and trainers.  The tone was set for success and JUNGLE COVE did not disappoint. He delivered everything that was expected of him (and more) from his progeny for the duration of his stud career in South Africa (1977 to 1987).  He produced tough, sound and consistent racehorses.

JUNGLE COVE finished up winning the national championship title five times (1981/82, 1982/83, 1983/84, 1985/86 and 1986/87).  He was a successful sire of two year olds and a great broodmare sire (his daughters were terrific race fillies / mares).

JUNGLE COVE is on record as having 6 of his sons stand at stud, including BUSH TELEGRAPH (Champion 2yo & 3yo and winner of the 1987 Rothmans July Handicap as a 3yo), who very sadly died aged just 10 years old from a heart condition after doing only 5 seasons at stud.  He managed to get three exceptional colts from the 5 crops – CRIMSON WAVES (winner of the 1993 South African Guineas & 1994 Queen’s Plate) (Sire), ASHTONTOWN (1995 Argus Bloodline Guineas, 1995 First National Bank 1600) (Sire) and LONDON NEWS (1995 The Dingaans, 1995 Administrator’s Classic, 1995 Daily News 2000, 1995 Rothmans July Handicap, 1996 Queen’s Plate, 1996 J&B Metropolitan, 1997 Queen Elizabeth II Cup in Hong Kong, 1997 Drill Hall Stakes) (Sire).

He was also the broodmare sire of 5 stallions at stud.

JUNGLE COVE was a great triumph for the Scott brothers.  Their decision to bring him to South Africa proved to be commercially lucrative for them and tremendously good for the South African Stud Book!
